The orginal home of Henry and Lucretia Clay was built in 1806 in Federal style (Benjamin Henry Latrobe, who was known for his design of the United States Capitol, had contributed to the design of the original house). The present house was rebuilt by son James B. Clay in 1857, designed by local architect Thomas Lewinski and used much better building materials.
