Oilbirds of Dunstan Cave. Deep in the forest below Asa Wright, the cave is said to be the most accessible Oilbird colony in the world. Almost the size of a Herring Gull, these nocturnal birds roost in cave by day, feeding on the fruit of the Oil Palm and other plants by night. The young become very fat before fledging, often 50% heavier than their parents. The indigenous people and early settlers harvested fat nestlings for their oil (for lamps and cooking), hence the name of the bird. Asa Wright only offers guided tour to guests who stay at least 3 nights.
