A juvenile male ruby-throated hummingbird checking on butterfly bush 'Honeycomb'. Notice his streaked gorget has a few red throat feathers but incomplete, indicating the bird was hatched in the spring of this year. (This photo was taken in fall.) Young males 'masquerade' as females until their first winter, at which time they attain adult male plumage of full red gorget.
